bills, Surry Hills

After what was a rather epic night at Tetsuya’s and a few drinks at Zeta Bar I woke up on my birthday feeling a million times better than I would have expected. We had decided on breakfast at bills for the simple facts that it had been quite a while since our last visit and it opens on Sundays with an all day breakfast.

Full aussie breakfast, scrambled eggs, sourdough toast, bacon, roast tomato, chipolatas and mushrooms ($24.50).

While it took only 1 second to decide on a coffee it took quite some time to pick out my breakfast. The ‘roast mushrooms with thyme and taleggio on spelt’ had me feeling like a mushroom hit, but the lure of bacon and eggs was just too big to resist. I caved in and went all out with the Full Aussie. As soon as it arrived I knew it would be a struggle to finish, the mountain of eggs alone would have been enough food. The mushrooms were an instant winner, so rich and buttery and the chipolatas were a great surprise as I usually find them pretty bland. Tomato was nice, bacon cooked how I like it and sourdough crispy and tasty. Sadly the eggs were a bit watery and lacking the richness they should have. The first time I ate at bills the eggs were sensational and since then I have cooked them at home often (following bill’s recipe). Lex and I both agreed that the home cooked version were far superior to these.

Ricotta hotcakes with fresh banana and honeycomb butter ($17.50).

Lex opted for sweet over savoury, something that I never really do for breakfast as it just doesn’t seem to satisfy me enough. The hotcakes were supremely light and fluffy with pocketfuls of ricotta hidden inside the fritters. Neither of us could really taste the honeycomb butter though adding a good dousing of maple syrup really amped up the sweetness, but luckily the chunky slices of banana scattered throughout and soothing ricotta made all the flavours work. Quite delicious and very filling.

Freshly squeezed orange juice ($6.50).

Yum, how can you not like freshly squeezed orange juice.

Even though I’m not one to go for sweet over savoury at breakfast the hotcakes were great and I could actually see myself ordering these one day. It was a shame that my eggs were a let down as the rest of the breakfast was quite impressive. Maybe if I had have gone for the mushrooms it would have been a different story.
